I bet you didn’t know that the right amount of nutmeg can make you high. 1.0 grams of nature’s little halogen will cause visual distortions and a mild euphoria. The spice is of a similar chemical make up as Ecstasy. But don’t start rummaging your spice rack just yet because an overdose of Grandma’s rice pudding (slight exaggeration) can cause you spiraling into Nutmeg Psychosis, which is “an acute psychiatric disorder marked by hallucinations, excitement, thought disorder, a sense of impending death and agitation”. Spices, plants, and herbs are an excellent alternative to over the counter medications or just a nice way to relieve stress ;). However, you should always be fully aware of what you’re consuming and its long term benefits or health risks.
I’m sure nearly everyone has tried an energy drink before. I’ve had my share: Redbulls, Rockstars, Full Throttles, Monsters, and even some Mexican energy drinks that I probably shouldn’t have chance. My particular favourite and weekly regular is a Monster. What I’m starting to notice is that I’m not the only one who drinks energy drinks, particularly Monster. My friend’s drink them, bloggers of read drink them, vloggers online are drinking them, everyone seems to be drinking these bad boys. Sometimes, I feel so irratated and tired that I just *need* to have a Monster to get me pumping. I’m literally not happy until that *pop* sound and the sweet, undetectable flavoured, but distinctly energized drink comes pouring down my throat. God, it makes me want one right now. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that drinking 3 a week may not be good for me… so I did a little test. I’ve been drinking three every other week to see how the side effects are. The weeks I drink Monsters I have: bad dreams, insomnia, migraines, heart palpitations, and hallucinations. The weeks I’m not drinking Monsters is incredibly different, though I can still feel the effects and I still want more. So why do I feel like this, and is it all together a bad thing?
The Monster energy drink claims to deliver twice the buzz of a regular energy drink with a three cans per day limit. It claims that it will “Unleash the beast”, whatever that means. The serving size is 8 fl. Oz, which is a normal Redbull can, however a Monster has two servings making it a whooping 16 oz energy force. The first twelve ingredients to make this kickass energizer are as follows:
Carbonated Water: Found in all sodas and many different drinks.
Sucrose: A common sweeter mainly found in junk food. Sucrose is a quick source of energy for the body, however it does have adverse health effects such as tooth decay and obesity.
