The manifestation of overwhelming obsessions, whether thoughts or actions, and compulsions is called Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD); classically defined as an anxiety disorder characterized by unwanted and repetitive thoughts and/or actions. OCD is classified as an anxiety disorder, psychological disorders characterized by distressing persistent anxiety or maladaptive behaviors that reduce anxiety. A simple crooked painting on the wall can be the equivalent to a giant elephant in the corner. Where a normal individual may be obsessed with why the elephant is there and how they can get rid of it, an OC sufferer can not rest until the frame is straight. 1 in 50 adults in the United States suffer from OCD, while many more hide their disorder because they believe they will be labeled as socially unacceptable, or they are uneducated on what they’re experiencing. It’s hard to understand what someone with OCD is experiencing; they are troubled with obsessive thoughts that are uncontrollable.

OCD usually becomes visible in males at the ages of 6 to 15 and females in their late teens and early twenties. OCD usually does not appear after the age of 25 unless the patient is predisposed and goes through a traumatic event. There are many different types of OCD, which does not always come in pairs of obsessions and compulsions. OCD can be diagnosed if only one obsession or compulsion is expressed. Typical OCD types are sufferers who obsessive over washing, cleaning, hoarding, checking, scrupulosity, and aggression. Examples of manifesting OCD symptoms are irrational checking of door locks, washing hands, or obsession with symmetry. Though these are typical symptoms, OCD can also manifest as thoughts of offending a higher power resulting in repetitive praying and confessing. Read the rest of this entry »

Girl in a field

When you think of environmentalist, what do you think of? Me, I think of a granola eating, tennis shoes wearing, dreadlocks sporting feminist. The combination of stereotype tree hugger with “it’s just too out of the way” hinders many people from environmentalism. The truth is, there are so many easy ways to help the environment that aren’t out of the way.

So, can you wear high heels and lips gloss and still care about the planet? Yes.

This is actually Meli, but I’m posting an update for Linda Belle. Last Thursday she got in a car accident and was sent to the hospital. She’s okay, but she’s got a fractured skull and lots of bruises. I talked to her earlier and she said she’d probably be in for about five more days. She wanted me to let you know that she was all okay (but that it “hurts like hell”), and I want you all to keep her in your prayers.

Leave her plenty of love, so when she comes back, she’ll know we missed her!

Studies have shown that vegetarians (following a well-balanced low-fat high-fibre vegetarian diet) often have lower incidence of coronary artery disease, hypertension, obesity and some forms of cancer. (1)

salad, bitch A recent thread at Snark and a post by Hannah external link of Creativeburst inspired me to make this post. It’s quite obvious that I’m not ashamed of being a vegetarian. Having been a vegetarian (and partial vegan) for more then two years, I’d like to talk a little more on this subject.

It’s hard living in a state that produced 95, 848 livestock for consumption (not counting chicken) in 2005 alone. (2) It’s not hard because I look out my window (our neighbors are ranchers) to see sweet cows happily grazing on the country side and I know they’re bound to turn into your next cheeseburger. It’s hard because of the way people treat me when they find out I’m a vegetarian. I’m a vegetarian for two reasons. The first is that I don’t like the taste of meat. The second is that humans were not made to eat meat. 3 I hope that you read the provided sources because it is not my intent on educating you. If you wish to debate my stance on this issue, especially via comments, I will please ask you to read my recommended articles first. Otherwise, I’ll just be responding with information you can find in those articles. Read the rest of this entry »

China LOLZ at tradez

China, the fourth largest nation in the world. With a population count around 1,321,851,888 people, you’ve got to be pretty intimidating. In 2003 China was the world’s fourth biggest importer. However, PPI suspects that China could in fact be the world’s biggest importer by 2010. China has slowly been fazing out importing to America in favour of Europe’s freer trading system. China’s exports to the United States were US$52.1 billion in 2000 and reached US$162.9 billion in 2005, an increase of 212 per cent. According to US customs statistics, the US exports to China were US$16.2 billion in 2000 and reached US$41.8 billion in 2005, an increase of 157 per cent. Among the top 15 trade partners of the United States, US exports to China had the fastest increase. ( China Daily ) Read the rest of this entry »
