Fox May Show New Muslim Comedy

Recently, 20th Century Fox TV picked up the rights for the Canadian Muslim comedy Little Mosque On The Prairie. Little Mosque On The Prairie aired in Canada last year and it was this year the Fox grabbed the rights to produce the American version.

Little Mosque is a show that centers around a group of families, their Mosque, and town members. It deals with everyday situations that Muslims deal with in a comedic way.

“Mosque” has garnered extensive U.S. interest in the media and within the TV industry since its premiere on pubcaster CBC in January 2007.

Darling said that Westwind and CAA were close to a U.S. deal just before the WGA strike but took a break in negotiations when Hollywood writers took to the picket lines.

Ultimately, 20th TV, led by head of comedy development Jonathan Davis, beat out rival U.S. studios and cable channels for the format rights.

“Fox got the creative vision of the show, that it has to be funny while it treads sensitively on certain Muslim issues,” Darling said.

The U.S. format deal will not preclude a separate deal to air the original Canadian comedy south of the border, she added. “Mosque” already has been sold widely internationally, including to Canal Plus in France.

20th TV has been active in the foreign scripted format arena, recently landing “The Ex List,” an adaptation of the Israeli show “Mythological X,” on the CBS schedule. Meanwhile, aspects of the Muslim culture were showcased on the CW’s praised but short-lived comedy “Aliens in America.”

I’m interested in seeing how the American public will react to this. I’ve watched three or four of the Canadian show, and it really isn’t that bad. In fact, it’s worth watching. It shows interesting (and relate-able) people and situations. It’s a cute show. What I feel is just… a complete slap in the face, is that it’s the FOX network (which has spread so much hate for the Muslim community) wants to show it.

Have you seen this show? How do you think Americans will react to it if Fox airs it? How do you feel about it?

I’m also interested in how Muslims see this show. Is it a correct interpretation of Muslim life?

My Personal Vendetta

Why am I so afraid to write something? It doesn’t HAVE to be my best, but I’m sure it would be excellent.

After finishing New Moon, I’m pretty much living on the assumption that every author can be published (if Meyers can be).

Tim Burton, step aside, you have pleased me with Sweeney Todd; it’s time for a more formidable travesty to grace my dear pages. Readers, meet Stephanie Meyers. I’m sure at least one Barnes & Noble lackey has tried to shove her down your throat at the cafeteria table. Never fear, I’ll save my insults for my next blog.

‘Funny Games’ - Movie Review

If you don’t remember, I rated Funny Games as something to make you look forward to 2008. For me, it was something that did make me look forward to this year. I’ve been waiting for this movie to be released ever since 2007. My expectations were exceeded for this film. It is a remake of the 1997 German film Funny Games, both with the same director (Michael Haneke). I have yet to see the German version, but I would really like to.

Summery: This film begins with the typical American family who go out to their cabin for vacation. When stopping to chat with their neighbors, they notice that the neighbors are acting odd around two new guests. The plot slowly moves on when Anne (the mother, played by Naomi Watts) is confronted with one of the first guests who asks to borrow eggs. He clumsily ends up breaking eight eggs before the next guess arrives along with the father and the son. The two young men (Peter and Paul) attack the father and break his leg. They then make a bet with the family that the family will not be alive tomorrow by 9 o’clock.

Rating: Four stars out of Five This was a superbly written and directed psychological thriller. It reminds me of Red Eye and the French film Merci Pour le Chocolat, if you enjoyed those two films you will also enjoy Funny Games. I must warn you, this movie is not Black Dahlia, Saw, or Hostel. Don’t expect fast pace scenes with blood and gore. This is an intelligent movie, and will not be received well by the typical movie goer. If you have already seen the movie (more…)

How to tell if your closest friend is your own schizophrenic delusion

In the past 42 hours I’ve watched three movies about people with “schizophrenia” (in actuality it would be defined as multi-personality or split personality disorder). I thought I should put together a quick guide so you can rest assured that your friends are not made up in your head. (This is simply based on Hollywood’s gross interpretation and glamorization of schizophrenia, not on any actual evidence.)

1. Does your close friend show up when you think about him or her?
2. Have you introduced your friend to your other friends and family? (Did they respond to your friend?)
3. Does your friend urge you to do things that you wouldn’t typically do? (Steal, lie, start a group of people who beat each other up for thrills, murder for fun)
4. Do you often space out or stand very still when in public and talking to your friend?
5. Does your friend ever age?
6. Does your friend wear the same clothes?
7. Can your friend physically pick up any object?
8. Is your friend chasing you or making you do “secret government work”?
9. Does your friend appear out of thin air?
10. Are you mentally, spiritually, or sexually repressed and wish that you were someone else because you thirst for blood?
11. Does your friend always seem to know extremely personal things about you?
12. Does your friend always seem to “know the truth” about other people?
13. Does your friend have qualities that you lack? (Outgoing, fun, likes to murder [cannot stress this enough])
14. Does your friend hate your other friends so much that he or she finds and excuse not to ever be around them?
15. Does your friend happen to strongly resemble a famous celebrity?

Answer yes to three or more of these? Please post your name, address, and a picture in my comments. You will receive a restraining order in 2-3 weeks. Thanks.
